Dinosaur Skin in Japan

Posted: 28th April 2007

Workers constructing a leisure facility in Japan found a fossil containing dinosaur skin. This is an extremely rare find as skin is not usually preserved in fossils as it generally rots away when an animal dies. In this case, what was found, are scales around 1/8 to 1/4 inches (3 to 5 millimeters) in size.

Apparently the dinosaur hasn't been identified yet because no bones have been found. However, it is believed to be from the skin of herbivorous dinosaur dating to the early Cretacious period, perhaps 140 to 100 millions old. One theory is that the dinosaur might be Fukuisaurus, which was apparently fairly common to the region during this period.

Quite a few other dinosaur fossils have previously been found in the vicinity. Coincidentally, dinosaur skin was also previously found in a fossil discovered nearby in 1995.
