Sue the T. Rex turns 25

Posted: 14th August 2015

Tyrannosaurus rex This week it's 25 years since "Sue", the world's largest and most famous Tyrannosaurus rex was found by paleontologists Sue Hendrickson and Peter Larson in South Dakota.

What's perhaps most remarkable about Sue is that the specimen is not only enormous, but it's nearly 90% complete (most dinosaur fossils are missing a large number of bones).

There was also a complicated ownership battle after the fossil was found, which I won't go into here (but you can read about in the Forbes article). Eventually, however she ended up in The Field Museum in the Chicago after being purchased for more than $8 million.

So just how big is Sue?
  • Her body is 12 meters (more than 39 feet) long.

  • She is estimated to have weighed around 6½ tons in life

  • When scientists wanted to do a CAT scan of her skull, it took several years before they could get a big enough CAT scanner!
Here are some news stories about Sue's "birthday":
  • Chicago Tribune: Field Museum celebrates Sue the T. rex's 25th birthday

  • Forbes: America's Most Famous (And Most Expensive) Dinosaur Turns 25 Today

  • Gizmondo: Paleontologists Discovered Sue the T. Rex 25 Years Ago Today [lots of good pictures in this one]
If you want to see Sue, go to the The Field Museum.
